City Council Passes Wichita's First Tree Canopy Policy

November 7, 2025

In October 2025, Wichita City Council passed its first formal tree canopy policy, requiring city departments to assess canopy impact as part of major infrastructure and development planning. It's the first time Wichita has put anything like this on paper.

ICT Trees has been pushing for a canopy protection framework since 2023. We submitted formal public comment, showed up to planning meetings, and connected city staff with heat mapping data we've been tracking. It wasn't fast, but it worked.

The policy doesn't stop private tree removal, and it doesn't yet have enforcement teeth. What it does is create an official tracking framework and require that canopy be part of the conversation when the city makes decisions about roads, utilities, and public land. That's new.

It's a foundation. We'll keep showing up to make sure it becomes something more.
